Scuola di Vino & Importers in Natural Wine

We hope this finds you well as we face the another onslaught of atmospheric rivers, snow, and whatever else this strange winter has in store before the oncoming spring. This month we are diving into some wines focusing on one particular importer, Scuola di Vino. Committed to working with wines that are totally natural: nothing added, nothing taken away Scuola brings in some of the most coveted natural wines from across Italy. Checking the back label and finding their signature lute, is a seal of quality and a promise of good times to be had.

Monthly Musings

This month we’ve got five super natty, zero/zero wines for you from all over the land of grapes, Italy. When teaching folks just getting into natural wine how to find or locate a natural wine to buy, one of the first things I always end up telling people is: Turn the Bottle Around. The importer or distributor can tell you a lot about the wines that you’re buying and they keep their info on the back label. Identifying importers with integrity that set defined requirements for their wines is an excellent way to be able to find some glou-glou, wherever you may be.

Scuola di Vino is a San Francisco based importer of Italian natural wines who clearly define the parameters for the wines they work. There wines all fits these specifications:

  • Organically or biodynamically grown grapes only.

  • Dry-farmed, low-yielding vineyards.

  • Hand-picked.

  • No added sugars and no foreign yeast

  • No adjustments for acidity.

  • No additives for color, mouth-feel, minerality, etc.

  • No external flavor additives, including those derived from new oak barrels, staves, chips, or liquid extract.

  • Minimal or no fining or filtration (no filtration at all is ideal)

  • No manipulation

  • Little or no added sulphites (no sulphur at all is ideal)

  • We stay away from high alcohol wines and fruit bombs

  • We don’t follow any wine critics magazine

Scuola holds some of the most cherished Italian natural wines throughout the industry and we’ve got a great little sampling for you. Dope lambruscos, lipsmacking skin contact white wine and some laser-focused reds.

P.s. One last thing to note. On March 15th we will be closing for a remodel so please pick up your order by Tuesday, March 14th. In the event you can’t make it by then, please email shane@littleprince.la to coordinate an alternative pick-up date.
